Students will be able to brainstorm a topic of interest, plan, and implement a self-directed passion project. If time, students can share out some ideas with the whole class. Talk with the class about how different topics require different types of learning and have students put stars next to the top 3 types of learning that interest them the most.
Next, instruct students to make a 3-column chart on the back of the and put their top 3 in each column. Independent Practice: Now, they can start brainstorming lists of interesting topics that would fit under each category.

They can start to narrow their lists down until they have selected which topic they want to focus on for their passion project. NOTE: For some students, idea generating can be really difficult, and I have found that the Brainstorm Your Interests handout is a great tool to help students get started on picking their topic.
Then, you can model for them how to make a list and how to cross choices off the list and narrow them down. Now that students have selected their topics for their passion projects, it is time for them to complete their Project Plan of Action.

Guided Practice: Go over each step of the plan of action with the class to help ensure they understand each step of planning out their projects. NOTE: Also go over the rubric to help students understand the expectations of this unit. Be sure to take some extra time to give a mini-lesson on Thick vs.
Thin questions use the handout to guide you and that good research questions should fall under the Thick category but that Thin questions are useful in answering the bigger Thick questions.

Mention to the class that their Thick questions should be questions that they do not know the answers to yet, but will be able to answer by the end of their projects. This typically takes work sessions. Once their plans have been approved, they may begin working on their projects. Be sure to set an overall due date for project completion, but the actual pacing of the project implementation will vary for each student based on individual project topics.
This step is lesson passion heart of the unit, and you can decide how much time you want to devote to these projects.

Do you want them to be mini-passion projects that will take weeks, or a more extended learning opportunity that might take weeks? When projects are complete, have students self-assess their projects by filling out the project rubric. Going over the rubrics together during a final weekly mini-conference is a great way to further engage students in the reflective stage of their projects. Students will then use Seesaw to create a digital portfolio to share their projects lesson passion a digital audience such as their families, other teachers, and classmates.
